These days, you really need to stay on top of developments at the Social Security Administration. The news has been breaking . . . fast and furious, let’s say.
Today’s newsletter on how to navigate SSA chaos - which I sent less than an hour ago - included discussion of the agency’s plans to sharply curtail transactions available through its toll-free line. But it turns out the agency this week decided to back off that plan.
It’s a win for beneficiaries, and for advocates and lawmakers who have been pushing back hard against some of these changes.
So far, it looks like the DOGE plan calling for 7,000 job cuts at the agency remains in place. And the brain drain among SSA technology staffers and others with expertise on the agency’s complex systems offer other good reasons to remain concerned about customer service.
Stay tuned.
